A working methodology
designed to benefit the Walloon economic fabric


Industrial needs translated into 7 collective "Grand Challenges".

Cybersecurity is and will remain a major challenge. However, the Walloon ecosystem is not yet sufficiently structured and companies, whether private or public, are not sufficiently aware of the risks, the consequences and consequently, the procedures to be put in place.


Prior to the project, companies active in the field were consulted with the aim of identifying initial needs. Most of the time, these are requests for application solutions that meet specific needs shared by several players. Unlike other application sectors, prior work is necessary to :

  1. translate needs into collective "Challenges"
  2. ensure that these Challenges correspond to cutting-edge, low-TRL research of today and tomorrow
  3. ensure that the resulting scientific challenges can be exploited in the short term by the business community

 

The major challenges identified throughout the project are as follows :

  • Automating cybersecurity verification of cyber-physical systems
  • Risk management for penetration testing
  • Cyber-security 'by design' of cyber-physical systems
  • Securing the digitisation of energy networks
  • Secure configuration of IoT communication infrastructure by design
  • Continuous monitoring of cyber security
  • Continuous monitoring of IIoT communications
  • Security of medical infrastructures

 

During the first year, two new challenges were identified :

  • Malware analysis
  • Legal aspects and cybersecurity standards

 

These two new challenges are driven by regulatory developments, with the coming into force of the cyber resilience act and the increase in ransomware attacks. The new challenges are also driven by the engagement of new researchers to work on research problems relevant to these challenges. These two challenges are emerging and have not been motivated by case studies from companies in the Region.

Win4Excellence is a collaborative research programme of excellence. In this spirit, the challenges of the CyberExcellence project are addressed by collective research involving researchers from different universities and research centres. Each researcher spends at least 15% of their time on solving the challenges and developing demonstrators.
